Hiring a designer to create a print or web project can be a tough task. There are a lot of things to consider, so we’ve put together a list of things to keep in mind when searching for the perfect designer to work with.
Look at Past Work
Hiring a designer is like hiring someone to paint your picture. Make sure their talents and skills are to your taste. All design firms would be more than happy to share their portfolio with you.
Ask for References
One of the best ways to determine if a design team will provide you with the service that you expect is to check with their past or current clients. If they’re happy, chances are you will be too.
Determine Your Needs
Before you meet with a designer, think about what you want out of your project:
- Does it need to appeal to a particular age group or other demographic?
- Does your web site need to provide you with a specific function?
- Do you have a set budget for this project?
- Have you seen other examples that you like?
- Does your website need to adhere to any corporate guidelines?
- Who will be using this site? Do you need the ability to edit it?
- How often will it need to be updated?
Here is an in-depth worksheet that will help you determine your website needs.
Designers can help you to expand on your ideas, but the more information you can provide them with at the onset of a project, the better they will be able to deliver what you need. They aren’t mind readers– if they produce something you don’t like, tell them! Everyone’s taste is different, so make sure you communicate things you like and things you don’t like. Providing examples of other work you like or dislike can be very helpful if possible.
